Holidays in South Tyrol

South Tyrol forms - together with the Province of Trento - Italy’s northernmost region (Trentino – Alto Adige) and it is located at the southern side of the Alps. Bolzano is the capital of the autonomous Province of South Tyrol, called Alto Adige in Italian; it counts approximately 100.000 inhabitants and functions as the province’s commercial, cultural, and political centre.
Corresponding its population groups South Tyrol has three official languages: German, Italian, and Ladinian. Thus more than two thirds of the South Tyroleans are part of the German-speaking population, a little bit less than one third belong to the Italian-speaking part and round about 4 percent are integral to the Ladinian language group – today a total of approximately 500.000 inhabitants live in South Tyrol which was separated from Austria and annexed to Italy after the First World War.

This holiday land with a turbulent history borders Austria to the North, Switzerland further to the west and the neighboring Italian provinces of Sondrio, Trentino, and Belluno to the South. South Tyrol’s landscape is characterised by steep mountain peaks, like those in the Val Venosta, in the Valle Isarco, and in the mountains of the Dolomites; but it is also characterized by fruity vineyards and orchards in the regions South Tyrol’s South or Merano and environs, as well as by beautiful rustic mountain huts like those in the enchanting Valle Aurina and Tures
