Alpe di Siusi - Sciliar in the holiday region Dolomites

At an altitude of approximately 1.000 m just south of the sleepy little town Chiusa lies the area of the Sciliar with the localities Castelrotto, Fiè, and Siusi.

From here you can reach Europe’s largest mountain pasture, the Alpe di Siusi, called Seiser Alm in German. This South Tyrolean highland is located at an altitude of 1.680 - 2.350 m and spreads over an area of 57 square kilometres.

Since 1975 the western part of the Alpe di Siusi together with the south-westerly located Sciliar mountain, called Schlern in German, and the Catinaccio region form the nature park Sciliar – Catinaccio.

In the southeast of the Alpe di Siusi lies the Gruppo del Sassolungo and to the north the mountain pasture borders the Val Gardena.

Since the construction of a funicular which transports people from Siusi to the upper terminus in Compatsch the Alpe di Siusi can be reached without car. Hence it is a very popular recreation area throughout the year.
