South Tyrol's South in South Tyrol

The holiday region South Tyrol’s South, called Sud dell’Alto Adige in Italian, reaches from the Val Sarentino all the way to the provincial capital of Bolzano, via the localities Appiano and Caldaro, along the wine route to Termeno, and finally to Salorno.

Besides numerous castle ruins - with a total of over 40 castle complexes the Bolzano Basin has the highest density of castles in all of Europe - and a couple of swimming lakes, like the Caldaro Lake or the Lakes of Monticolo, round about 84 percent of South Tyrol’s wine businesses have been established in this area.

The landscapes of South Tyrol’s South are characterized by vines, apple gardens, and cypresses. The region is located in a transition area between the Alpine and Mediterranean climate.

A little bit farther south lies the provincial town of Bolzano. With a population of 100.000 it is not only South Tyrol’s biggest locality but also a significant melting pot of the cultural regions of Austria, Germany and Italy.
Not only amateur geologists have heard about the Bletterbach Canyon. It represents a geological peculiarity and is primarily known for its many fossil finds. The gorge is often also referred to as the Grand Canyon of South Tyrol.
