Val Venosta in South Tyrol
The Val Venosta, called
Vinschgau in German, is South Tyrol’s westernmost region.
Geographically this area with a higher-than-average
sunshine duration reaches from the Austrian locality
Nauders to the Tel; from a geographic point of view the villages
Naturno, Plaus, and Parcines belong to the Val Venosta but
politically they are part of the district council of the
Merano and environs.
The sun-blessed Val Venosta is traversed by Italy’s second
longest river, namely the Isarco river.
It originates in the far west of South Tyrol at the
Passo di Resia in the Ötztal Alps and
flows into the Adriatic in Upper Italy. |

The Val Venosta is also well-known for its
high mountain peaks. The 3.905 m high Ortles for
instance is South Tyrol’s highest mountain. The entire Ortles region is
located in the national park Passo dello Stelvio. With
a surface area of more than 134.000 hectares it counts to the largest
nature sanctuaries in all of Europe.
